Nonzine Review: July 21st, 2006

(SIDE NOTE: after this article was published, the writer ceased writing for Nonzine, and Nonzine stopped writing live show reviews. Funny thing is, the writer actually became a regular at the Gardes' shows, apologizing for this article about how he couldn't have been more wrong, and when the Gardes went on hiatus from playing live, he said, "No, no, Now is not the time to stop." )

July 11th- The HiLo-

The Gardes- Asleep, Audience...Dream! - Good Morning Midnight

Guerilla Live Show Reviews

by Nathan Lofties

I've never seen the Hi-Lo quite this packed. It was difficult to move from one spot to another, but it was due to both cramped conditions and the fact that a lot of recognizable faces were about. There was a heavy air about from news of Syd Barret's passing, but it was more an air of celebrating the life of a genius, not mourning it.

Opener The Gardes did nothing to offend, but little to catch the attention. An acoustic bass made a nice visual, when visible on the Hi-Lo's obscured stage. After a standard-length set of catchy but forgettable, folksy tunes, Asleep, Audience...Dream! arose to play a fantastic set that ranged from oddball songs, to a David Bowie old school cover (a great track from The Man Who Sold the World, and no, it was not "The Man Who Sold The World"), to things that simply were fun. It was my first chance to catch a full ASD set, it did not disappoint.

I had to slip off before I caught the full set of Good Morning Midnight, but it ranged somewhere in the same category as The Gardes in terms of revelations and detestations- that is to say little of either. I'll have a more rounded, fair opinion next time, GMM.
